Dubai & Abu Dhabi Yacht Departure Points: A Complete Guide
Your charter starts at the marina. In Dubai and Abu Dhabi, each departure point gives you a different first view of the coastline. Some put you right next to landmarks. Others are quieter, with clearer water faster. This guide explains the main marinas, what leaves from where, and what you need to know before you book.
Dubai Departure Points
Dubai Harbour is the newest and largest cruise and yacht hub in the city. It sits between Bluewaters Island and Palm Jumeirah. From here you're minutes from Ain Dubai, JBR, and the Palm. Most charter brokers will suggest Dubai Harbour for its size and direct sea access. It's close to the Palm's tip, so you pass Atlantis quickly. There are no fixed barriers or bridges—you go straight to open water. Parking is available, but on weekends and during events it fills up.
Dubai Marina is older but more central. You can depart from Marina Walk, near Pier 7 or the DMCC metro station. The marina channel is long and lined with residential towers. Exiting takes about 15-20 minutes. You then reach JBR and the coast. It's a good choice if you want a stroll along the marina before departure. However, the channel can be tight for larger yachts (over 70 feet).
Dubai Creek is traditional. Charters from here go up the creek or out to the Dubai Water Canal. You see the historic side of Dubai: the souks, the small boats, the skyline from a different angle. Good for sailing yachts and smaller day boats. Not for speed or quick access to JBR.
Palm Jumeirah has several private beaches and the Palm Jumeirah Hotel. Some charters depart directly from the Palm's fronds or from the hotel's jetty. This is convenient if you're staying on the Palm. The water around the Palm is calm, but there are restrictions on access points.
Festival City Marina is at Dubai Festival City by the Dubai Creek. It's near the Creek extension and the InterContinental Hotel. Used less often for standard charters, but good if you want a departure close to Deira and Bur Dubai.
Business Bay is along the Dubai Water Canal. Charters here show you the canal's facade: the skyscrapers, the bridges, the fountains. It's a shorter run to the sea and then Dubai Harbour. Often used for dinner cruises or business events.
Abu Dhabi Departure Points
Yas Marina is the F1 circuit's marina. It's modern, with hotels and restaurants. Charters here often start near the Yas Marina Circuit track. You see Yas Island's attractions from the water. Good for speed and access to open sea.
Emirates Palace Marina is on the West Corniche, right by Emirates Palace. This is a central Abu Dhabi point. You head out past the Corniche beachfront. Views from here are of the city skyline and the Palace. It's a short run to Lulu Island.
Marsa Al Bateen is a traditional dhow harbour turned into a marina. It's nearer to the Eastern Mangroves. Ideal for mangrove eco-cruises and smaller boats.
Eastern Mangroves has a designated jetty for eco-tours. Charters here stay in the channels. You see mangroves and birdlife. Not for open-water speed.
Al Bandar is at Al Raha Beach. It's a quieter marina. Used for fishing trips and day boats heading out to the islands.
Sightseeing from the Water
From Dubai Harbour, in the first 15 minutes you see the Palm, Atlantis, and the Burj Al Arab. From the Marina, you see JBR Beach and the coast. From the Creek, you see the old city and the skyline from afar. In Abu Dhabi, from Emirates Palace you see the Corniche, Emirates Palace, and Qasr Al Watan. From Yas you see the F1 track. Most charters pass Lulu Island and Saadiyat Beach.
Price Ranges
Departure point doesn't change the base hourly rate, but it can affect logistics. Marinas with easier access cost the same. A small day boat (31-35 ft) runs AED 400-700 per hour. A luxury motor yacht (40-70 ft) costs AED 3,000-5,000 per hour. Superyachts (100 ft+) start around USD 3,000 per day, plus 5% VAT and about 30-35% APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance). Confirm exact rates at enquiry.
What to Know
- All private charters require a captain. Standard charters cap guests at ~12 (plus crew). Larger groups need inspected vessels.
- BYOB is often allowed, but check house rules.
- Peak season is November to April (24-28°C). Sunset slots book first. Mornings are calmest.
- Events like NYE, National Day (Dec 2), and the Dubai Boat Show (Feb/Mar) mean earlier booking and possible surge rates.
