How to Charter a Yacht in the UAE — Step-by-Step Guide

Chartering a yacht in the UAE is simpler than most people expect. The market is well-established, operators are professional, and the process from enquiry to boarding takes just a few days. This guide walks you through every step — from choosing the right boat to what to expect on the day.

Step 1: Decide on Your Group Size and Budget

The two most important variables in choosing a charter are your group size and your budget. Group size determines the minimum boat size you need — a 40 ft motor yacht comfortably fits 10–12 guests; a 60 ft yacht can accommodate 20–25. Budget determines the type of vessel and the duration of your charter.

As a rough guide: a 2-hour private charter on a day boat for 8 guests starts from approximately AED 800–1,400. A 3-hour sunset charter on a mid-size motor yacht for 15 guests starts from approximately AED 2,400–4,500. These are indicative ranges — confirm exact rates with your operator.

Step 2: Choose Your Departure Point

In Dubai, the main departure points are Dubai Harbour, Dubai Marina, and the Palm Jumeirah. Dubai Harbour is the most popular — it is close to Ain Dubai, Bluewaters Island, and JBR Beach, and has the widest selection of operators. Dubai Marina is the classic choice for a scenic urban cruise. In Abu Dhabi, the main options are Yas Marina, Emirates Palace Marina, Marsa Al Bateen, and Al Bandar.

Step 3: Choose the Type of Charter

There are two main types of charter in the UAE:

  • Private charter: You hire the entire vessel exclusively for your group. The captain and crew work for you. You set the itinerary, the music, and the pace. This is the most popular option.
  • Shared charter: You join other guests on a scheduled cruise. Significantly cheaper (AED 100–250 per person), but you share the boat with strangers and follow a fixed itinerary.

Step 4: Submit Your Enquiry

Once you know your group size, budget, departure point, and preferred date, submit an enquiry through our platform. Provide as much detail as possible: the occasion (birthday, corporate event, leisure), any special requirements (catering, decorations, watersports), and your preferred departure time.

We will match you with verified operators who have availability for your date and send you their quotes. Most operators respond within a few hours during business hours.

Step 5: Review and Confirm

When you receive quotes, compare them on the basis of: the vessel (size, age, condition), what is included (catering, drinks, watersports), the operator's reviews and verification status, and the total price including VAT. Ask any questions before you confirm — a good operator will be happy to clarify.

Once you are happy, confirm your booking with a deposit (typically 25–50% of the total). The balance is usually paid on the day of the charter.

Step 6: The Day of Your Charter

Arrive at the marina 15–20 minutes before your departure time. The captain will brief you on safety procedures before departure. Once underway, the crew will look after you throughout the charter. If you have arranged catering, it will be served at the agreed time. At the end of the charter, the captain will return you to the marina.

Tips for a Great Charter Experience

  • Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat — even on cloudy days, UV exposure on the water is high.
  • Wear non-slip, flat-soled shoes. High heels and leather-soled shoes can damage the deck.
  • If you are prone to seasickness, take medication before boarding. The Arabian Gulf is generally calm, but it is better to be prepared.
  • Tip the crew if they have done a great job. 5–10% of the charter fee is customary.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need any experience to charter a yacht in the UAE?

No. All private charters in the UAE are captained — a licensed captain and crew are included in the price. You do not need any sailing or boating experience. You simply turn up and enjoy the experience.

How far in advance do I need to book a yacht charter in the UAE?

For a standard weekday charter, 3–5 days in advance is usually sufficient. For weekend slots during peak season (November–April), we recommend 1–2 weeks. For special events (NYE, F1, public holidays), book 1–3 months in advance.

What happens if the weather is bad on my charter day?

UAE weather is generally excellent from November to April. If conditions are genuinely unsafe, the operator will reschedule your charter at no extra cost. Light wind and small waves are normal and do not affect most charters. Your captain will make the final call on safety.
