A day-trip to Zaya Nurai Island is one of the best ways to spend a day on the water near Abu Dhabi. The private island sits about 15 km off the coast, reachable only by boat. This guide covers what it costs, how to get there, and what to expect.

What Is Zaya Nurai Island?

Zaya Nurai is a private island resort east of Abu Dhabi. It has white-sand beaches, overwater villas, several restaurants and bars, a spa, and a pool. You don't need to be a guest to visit: day passes are available for the beach club and facilities. The island is a popular stop for private yacht charters, as it offers a resort experience with the freedom of your own boat.

Getting There: Charter a Private Boat

There's no public ferry to Zaya Nurai. The only way to arrive is by private boat or helicopter. Most visitors charter a yacht from Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

Departure Points

  • Dubai: Dubai Harbour, Dubai Marina, or Palm Jumeirah. The crossing takes about 60–75 minutes from Dubai Harbour, depending on sea conditions.
  • Abu Dhabi: Yas Marina, Emirates Palace Marina, or Marsa Al Bateen. The crossing is 20–30 minutes from Abu Dhabi marinas.

Vessel Options

  • Motor yachts (40–70 ft): Most common for day-trips. Comfortable, fast, and suited for groups up to 12 guests.
  • Catamarans (55 ft+): More stable, with more deck space. Good for larger groups or those prone to seasickness.
  • Superyachts (100 ft+): Available for those seeking extra luxury. Only inspected vessels can carry more than 12 guests, so larger groups require a superyacht.

All charters include a captain and crew. You're not allowed to drive the boat yourself unless you hold a local license and the charter company approves.

What's Included on the Charter

A standard day-charter to Zaya Nurai typically includes:

  • Fuel for the crossing.
  • Crew (captain, deckhand, sometimes a steward).
  • Snacks and soft drinks – many operators offer a welcome platter.
  • Water toys – paddleboards, inflatables, sometimes snorkel gear.
  • Docking fee at Zaya Nurai's jetty. This is often included in the charter price, but confirm at booking.

What's not included: restaurant meals on the island, or any extra services like a chef or bartender (available for an additional fee).

Costs: Indicative Ranges

Prices vary depending on vessel size, season, duration, and operator. All figures are indicative and should be confirmed at enquiry. Prices are in AED and do not include 5% VAT unless stated.

  • Day-trip from Dubai (8–10 hours, motor yacht up to 12 guests): from ~AED 20,600 plus VAT.
  • Day-trip from Abu Dhabi (shorter crossing, 6–8 hours): generally a bit less, from ~AED 15,000 plus VAT.
  • Superyacht charter (100 ft+, 8–10 hours): upwards of USD 3,000/day plus 5% VAT and 30–35% APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance). The APA covers fuel, food, drinks, and dockage – whatever is spent goes from the APA, and the remainder is refunded.

Expect a surcharge for weekends, public holidays, and peak season (November to April). Sunset slots (4pm–8pm) are popular and may cost the same as a full day.

Zaya Nurai Island: What to Do

Once you dock, you have two main options:

  • Beach Club day pass: Gives you access to the main pool, sun loungers, and the beach. Food and drinks are extra. Prices vary by season; check the island's website or ask your charter operator.
  • Restaurants and bars: Zaya Nurai has several dining venues, from casual poolside fare to fine dining. Reservations recommended, especially on weekends. The resort's main restaurant, Smoking Gun, serves international cuisine with views of the water.
  • Spa and activities: The spa offers treatments (book ahead). You can also rent kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, or book a guided snorkeling trip around the island.

Note that day-pass holders are typically restricted to certain areas – the resort's guest villas and some beaches are for overnight guests only. Ask your charter company about current access rules at booking.

Best Time to Go

  • Peak season: November through April. Weather is pleasant (24–28Β°C), seas are calm. Book weeks in advance.
  • Shoulder months: October and April. Still good, but lighter demand.
  • Summer (May–September): Hot (35–45Β°C), though many boats have air-conditioned cabins. Lower prices but less comfortable above deck.
  • Time of day: Morning departures (around 9am) give you a full day on the island. Afternoon departures (around 2pm) are cheaper but you'll have fewer hours. Sunset cruises back (5pm–6pm) offer dramatic light over the Arabian Gulf.

Rules & Practical Tips

  • Guest cap: Most private charters are licensed for a maximum of 12 guests plus crew. For larger groups, you need a certified inspected vessel (often a superyacht).
  • BYOB: You may bring your own alcohol, but the crew has the right to enforce house rules. Some operators charge a corkage fee. Confirm beforehand.
  • No overnight: The yacht charter ends when you return to port. If you want to stay on the island, you need to book a resort room separately.
  • Sea sickness: The crossing from Dubai can be choppy in winter. Bring motion sickness tablets if prone.
  • What to pack: Sunscreen, hat, swimsuit, cover-up, a light jacket for the return trip, and your camera.
