Yacht Guest Limits in Dubai & Abu Dhabi: How Many Passengers?
Guide to yacht guest limits in Dubai & Abu Dhabi: standard 12-guest cap, larger vessels available, plus charter rules on crew, BYOB, and insurance.
Yacht Guest Limits in the UAE β What You Need to Know
The quick answer: most private yacht charters in Dubai and Abu Dhabi cap guests at 12 passengers plus crew. In practice, licensed operators apply this limit to standard charter vessels. If you need space for more than 12, you can charter a larger certified inspected vessel β but availability and cost rise significantly. Here is the breakdown of limits, rules, and what affects them.
Why the 12-Guest Cap?
Operators treat the 12-guest figure as the working standard. Standard charter yachts are licensed to carry up to 12 passengers. This applies even if the boat could physically fit more. The crew is separate from the headcount. If you exceed 12, operators keep within their licensing and insurance terms. So when a charter says "up to 12 guests," that is the practical maximum operators will confirm.
Larger Groups: Vessels for 20+ Guests
For groups larger than 12, you need a vessel classified as a "passenger ship" β larger, with additional safety equipment and a different license. These are typically superyachts 100 feet or longer, or specially inspected commercial vessels. They can carry 20, 30, or even more guests. The catch: they are harder to find in the UAE charter market, and the pricing changes. Expect superyacht rates from around USD 3,000 per day, plus 5% VAT and a 30-35% Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) for fuel, food, and dockage. For peak events like Abu Dhabi F1, superyacht charters run into six figures, up to ~AED 1.7 million for the weekend.
Guest Limits by Departure Point
Different marinas have different berthing capacities and access rules, but the guest cap is set by the vessel's license, not the marina. You can depart from Dubai Harbour, Dubai Marina, Dubai Creek, Palm Jumeirah, Festival City Marina, or Business Bay β all follow the same 12-guest rule for standard charters. In Abu Dhabi, the main departure points are Yas Marina, Emirates Palace Marina, Marsa Al Bateen, Eastern Mangroves, and Al Bandar. Again, the same limit applies.
Crew, Captains, and BYOB
Every charter is captained β you cannot self-drive. The crew count is separate from the guest limit. Most charters include a captain and at least one deckhand or steward. The total number on board (guests + crew) must not exceed the vessel's certified capacity.
BYOB: Many operators allow you to bring your own alcohol, subject to house rules. Some charge a corkage fee; others restrict glass bottles. Confirm at the time of booking. The guest limit is not affected by BYOB.
Events and Peak Season
During peak season (November to April, especially December and New Year's Eve), guest limits remain the same, but availability shrinks. Sunset slots and weekends book first. For events like the Dubai Boat Show (Feb/Mar), Abu Dhabi Boat Show (late Nov), or Abu Dhabi F1 (early Dec), larger vessels become even scarcer. If you have a group of 15-20 and want a specific date, book months ahead.
How Many Guests Fit on Different Boat Types?
- Day boats (31-35 ft): usually up to 6-8 guests (plus crew).
- Motor yachts (40-70 ft): up to 12 guests standard.
- Superyachts (100 ft+): up to 12 as a standard charter; some certified for 20+.
- Catamarans (55 ft+): typically 12 guests, but larger catamarans can hold up to 20+.
- Sailing yachts: generally 6-10 guests, depending on size.
Always confirm the exact limit for the specific vessel you are considering.
FAQ
Can we have more than 12 on a superyacht? It depends on the vessel's license. Some superyachts are certified for up to 30 passengers. You must ask the operator and ensure they provide a certified vessel.
Do children count in the guest limit? Yes, children are counted as guests. Infants may be exempt if they sit on a parent's lap β confirm with the operator.
What happens if we exceed the limit? The charter will not depart. Operators enforce the limit. If you try to bring extra guests, you risk losing the booking and deposit.
Can we split the group across two boats? Yes. For a party of 20, you can charter two 12-guest yachts and travel together. This is a common workaround for larger groups.
Are there any additional fees for extra guests? If a vessel's maximum is 12 and you have 10, you pay the same as for 12. Some operators charge per person for catering or fuel, but the charter fee covers up to the limit.
Does the crew count include the captain? Crew includes the captain, deckhands, hostesses, and any additional staff. They are not part of the guest limit.
